Hapworth 16, 1924 was published in the June 19, 1965 issue of the New Yorker Magazine, and became the last piece published by J.D. Salinger. In 1996 Orchises Press, Alexandria Virginia, contacted the author regarding the publication of the Hapworth novella. After several negotiations it looked as though Hapworth would finally be published as a stand-alone book, but as fate would have it, Orchises made an unfortunate error. Salinger withdrew himself from the contract and ended Orchises’ hopes of publishing Hapworth.
Now, 14 years later, researchers Nicholas Matranga (Fine Art) and Žiga Testen (Design) decided to publish Hapworth 16, 1924 after all, following the demands J.D. Salinger originally made to Orchises.
