The image of masculinity has changed dramatically in the last century; yet, at the same time, it has stayed the same. If one believes in advertising, a man today is different from a man several centuries ago.
Is the ‘Diet Coke man’ now the ‘Zero man’? How has the image of masculinity and man's perception of himself changed, what is different and how is masculinity perceived in the shadow of the new femininity? These are the questions which I would like to investigate, and thereby develop an artistic form.
Inspired by Andy Warhol's observations and illustrations in his book Men, I want to explore this topic in the form of interviews, and to examine how men's take on their own masculinity has changed over the course of the years. From appearance to upbringing and religion to sexuality – all these things play a role in the perception of the male sex. There are hardly any societal roles and professions anymore, which are only for men or women; everyone can do what he/she likes. But what then remains to identify our sex with? Where are the boundaries and how have they shifted? I am particularly interested in the boundaries of shame and embarrassment, and their associated physical aspects.
